1. Thank you for taking some time to be interviewed for Trap Metal Magazine. Can you please introduce yourself to our readers who might not already know your name?
We’re OVRLK, a trap metal project out of Spokane WA, formed in 2024.
2. Where does the name come from? Is there a story? Or did it just sound cool?
OVRLK (pronounced overlook) is a reference to the haunted hotel in The Shining. We’re all huge movie fans, especially horror films, and we wanted a name to reflect that common interest.
3. Where does your journey in the music industry start? Were you playing any other instruments or participating in any other creative endeavors before this one?
We have all been in the Spokane music scene for over a decade in multiple bands and have played on many bills together. A couple of us have played together in other projects, Willie and Lane were in a band called Free The Jester together and Willie and Gabe were in a band called From Us Comes Knowledge. Other notable groups we have played with are Insidual, Hellderado, Lilac City Dynamics and Velafire.
4. Where are you based out of?
We’re proud to be based out of Spokane WA.
5. Who gets bragging rights for helping you get to where you are now? Who are your day ones?
We are lucky to have a bunch of great fans from our hometown that have supported all our projects over the years. Spokane is full of great show promoters, audio engineers and booking agents who we count as close friends and have collaborated with in the past. That being said, one of the main pillars of OVRLK is that the four of us do everything in house. We all have different rolls we excel at, whether it be booking, social media, writing, recording or video editing. We are damn proud to be a true DIY band. Our drummer Corey does deserve a special shout out for being an extremely talented audio engineer, our songs wouldn’t sound as good as they do if it weren’t for his tireless efforts in the studio. Short story long, it’s our own efforts and past experiences in music that drive OVRLK every day. If we were going to shout out one person who’s not in the band, it would be Ryan Levey who owns Monumental Shows and our favorite hometown venue The Big Dipper. He has never been shy about believing in us and giving us both in town and out of town opportunities.
6. What do you have planned for the rest of the year? Any new albums, singles, shows, or music videos dropping later in the year?
We will be releasing at least two singles with videos this year and we are currently booking shows in the fall.
7. What is your local music scene like? What are the pros? What are the cons? And where do you see room for improvement?
Spokane has a great scene full of killer acts. The metal and hip hop communities are especially strong, and we like to think we fit in with both. The fans are awesome too, our city truly loves and shows up for its own bands. The scene took a big hit during Covid for obvious reasons, but we are starting to see it really come alive again, and happy to be a part of the revival. If we had any criticism for our scene it would be over saturation. Seeing bands get out of town more as opposed to playing the same in town venues every month would definitely be a breath of fresh air. It’s great to play shows at home, but doing it more than 3 times a year is holding people back more than they realize.
8. With an interest in who your influences are. If you could go on tour with anyone in the world, who would you choose?
Limp Bizkit, Wu Tang, Dropout Kings, Tech 9 and OVRLK would be a kick ass tour… we’re down if they’re interested.
9. How have you had to overcome adversity? What are some of the trial and tribulations that molded you into the artists that you are now?
The music industry is a tough one, even more so when you have a DIY approach to it. We have all had our successes and failures over the years that have molded us, but more importantly those experiences are what brought the four of us together and created this band. We cant complain too much, as long as we got a dope band, a stage and some killer fans to play in front of, we’re gonna keep grinding, cuz it’s all we really know how to do.
10. What is the end game for you? Where do you see yourself in 20 years? What about 30 years? And where do you want to be in life, when it’s time to leave this realm.
We see ourselves on tour with Limp Bizkit, Wu Tang, Dropout Kings and Tech 9… No but seriously, we’re just gonna keep playing music. If that means 20 or 30 years of small venues or someday playing arenas, just know when you see the name OVRLK on the marquee, we’re coming with energy and a whole lotta vibes. When we leave this realm, hopefully there’s at least one OVRLK song left behind that means something to someone and makes them happy.
